Perfume and Cologne: They Are Not Synonymous Fragrances

April 10, 2008

Perfumes happen to be topping the list while making purchases for women and men both.  The same is the case with Colognes.  Generally perfumes are available in variety of brands, variety of shapes and sizes. So it becomes ideal as a gift. It can be an ultimate gift for that special one on her birthdays so that she can wear it on that day and also feel as special. There are several perfume brands available in the market. There are a variety of perfumes to choose from. Perfumes may vary from being fruity and floral to being very overpowering. However with the fact that people now paying attention to minute details of the perfumes, one thing should be noted that there is a vast difference between a perfume and cologne.

Sweet Fragrance

Perfumes generally preferred by women and they were just intended to provide a sweet and floral fragrance for men. Perfumes are mainly derived from flowers and fruits Perfumes however (depending upon the brand) are long lasting (in case of certain fragrances they can last for a two days). Generally a dab or two is required and the fragrance will make you feel fresh the whole day.

Know About Cologne

Cologne is just a bit weaker and is sometimes mischaracterized as a men’s product. Perfumes are generally made up of three layers that are technically called notes in perfume industry. Each note was a different scent that would come about in the beginning of the day, lunchtime, and at the end of the day. Since perfumes have strong smell, a dab or two is required to keep you going and in certain cases they even last for a day or two.

As far as perfumes and colognes are concerned it is just the matter of taste. With so many varieties available in both it completely depend on you which fragrance you like. So it is indeed a matter of taste. A fragrance, which may appeal to you, may not appeal other. It is the case with Colognes as well.

Colognes unlike Perfumes are single scented fragrance. (Perfumes consist of three notes). Colognes are not as strong as perfumes. In other words they are a milder version of perfumes. It is generally men who prefer colognes, as it has a masculine kind of fragrance. Since the fragrance is mild, colognes are not long lasting scents. Repeated dab on is required to maintain the smell and freshness.

Most cologne for women come in spray applicators but some brands of cologne is also available in a splash. Men’s cologne is commonly made from Cyhypre, Fougere, Spicy, Woody and other less sweet scents. Men’s cologne will not last for more then a day and the scent will be gone after showering. Many a time, the cologne manufacturing companies also provide a spray applicator along with cologne for better usage.

An important thing to remember that while applying a cologne, use only a moderate amount, as too much cologne can turn a nice scent into an overwhelming, nauseating experience.

Perfume contains the highest concentration of essential oils to alcohol (about 30% by volume). Cologne contains the lowest (about 5% to 8%).
Summary
Thus with so many scents available in the market, one often gets confused as to which one is for man and which is for woman. But with these general guidelines one can very well find out whether the scent is perfume or cologne. However both perfumes and colognes are available in departmental stores and can also be ordered online. So if one has a budget then colognes are a good choice and if money is not a criterion then perfumes are indeed a good choice.
