Hair Care- Hair requires your attention!!

June 13, 2008

Hair is not a living part of your body. However, your hair still needs proper care for optimum health and beauty. One of the key elements to having shiny, healthy hair is to allow the natural oils in the scalp to lubricate it. The hair closest to the scalp benefits from natural sebum oils the most while longer hair can become dry and brittle from a lack of these oils.

Hair care tips for different hair:

Ø Care of Oily Hair and Scalp Condition:

The principle of care for oily hair and scalp condition is the same as used for oily skin condition. The routine aims at removing the excess oil and to exfoliate skin cells which clog up and suffocate the hair follicles in our scalp. The emphasis is laid on cleansing and toning routines. Since the hair has to be washed as frequently as it gets dirty and oily, a natural shampoo on a formulation of herbs such as amla, shikakai, trijla is ideal. Massaging hair and scalp is important for the well being as well as good growth of the hair.

Home-made Cosmetics for Oily Hair:

· Take some dry soap nuts (reetha) and soak them in water overnight. Mash them in the morning and strain the soapy solution. Add a tsp of shikakai powder and wash your hair. If you are unable to make the shampoo cleanser at home, use this infusion recipe. Prepare it and mix in the shampoo you use.

Ø Care for Dry Hair:

Dry hair looks brittle and feels “crunchy” to the touch. There are many causes of dry hair, ranging from genetics to hair treatments. Dry hair tends to be thin and rough. It is susceptible to tangles, damage, breakage and split ends. The primary aim is to replenish the oil and the moisture in the hair.

Home-made Cosmetic Care for Dry Hair:

· Beat an egg in a cup of the skimmed milk. When the foam becomes consistent, rub it into the scalp. Leave it on for 5 minutes. Rinse the hair thoroughly with water. Carry out this routine twice a week.
·
Beat one tbsp of castor oil, one tbsp of glycerine, one tbsp of cider vinegar and a tsp of mild herbal shampoo. Apply it on scalp and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse with clear water.

General hair care Tips:

· Wash your hair as frequently as you need to and always use appropriate shampoo and conditioner.
· Never comb wet hair. Dry it out gently and then remove the tangles without using undue pressure.
· Always use a soft brush with correctly spaced bristles.
· Keep your combs and brushes scrupulously clean.
· Try not to backcomb, pull your hair into a tight knot or try very unconventional styles that involve twisting and tugging your hair, unless it’s necessary.
Always massage your scalp and brush your hair with firm, gentle strokes before you go to bed every night.
· If you have undue hair loss, dandruff or any other persistent hair-related problem, check with your doctor to see if you have hormonal imbalance, scalp infection, disease or are suffering from physical, emotional or environmental stress. Then follow the course of treatment the doctor prescribes.
· Double-check any product you use on your hair. Ask your beauty parlor assistant about the hair bleach, coloring etc., she is going to use on you, and if it has any effects… now or later.
· Before going to a party wash, condition and blow-dry your hair. Then set it into any style that suits the shape of your face and the dress you’re going to wear.
· Drink plenty of water in summer and gulp down some fresh vegetable and fruit juices to improve hair from within. Follow a protein-packed diet.
Make sure you trim your hair and keep it in good shape regularly.
· Avoid unnecessary use of hair sprays etc., on a daily basis.

Summary:

How you take care of your hair depends on the type of hair you have, your lifestyle, and how you style your hair. People with dry, curly hair have different hair care needs than people with straight, fine hair. But all hair needs to be treated gently.
