June 13, 2008
Black hair care is an overall term for parts of hygiene and cosmetology involving the hair on the human head. Black hair should be coloured with caution because of its natural dryness and porosity. Proper hair care will lead to healthier and better looking hair. Bad hair care tactics, or not taking care of your hair can lead to breakage, fly away, frizzes, split ends, dull hair, and early hair loss. Black hair needs special care because they are fragile and difficult to control. Black hair is always almost curly, although the degree of wave varies enormously.
Hair need to be strong and healthy to take any type of chemical treatment. To check hair strength and natural elasticity, pluck out a hair and hold it firmly between both hands, then pull gently. If the hair breaks with hardly any stretching, it is in week and poor condition, in which all chemical treatments should be avoided.
Tips and Tricks for Black Hair Care:-
· Be gentle with your hair, especially if you have been treating your hair with relaxing creams coloring, bleaching or curling. Always use a wide-toothed comb with smooth teeth that don’t “catch” your hair, and don’t force your hair to do anything, have patience with your hair.
· Black hair requires regular shampooing, conditioning, careful drying, and styling to avoid excessive breakage and shedding and encourage new growth.
· If you are visiting a new hair stylist (or even your usual one) is sure they take into account what product you used previously - different products can react in such a way as to damage your hair.
· It is best to limit washing Black hair to once weekly. Detangle the hair using a wide tooth comb before wetting it thoroughly with warm water. Apply a low pH shampoo liberally with smooth downward strokes, taking care not to tangle the hair. Gently massage the shampoo into the hair until product buildup, oils and grease have been removed. Rinse in warm water and gently towel dry. Hair is most fragile when it is wet, so be careful not to vigorously rub the scalp, especially prior to a chemical service.
· Since Black hair tends to be dry and brittle, select a deep penetrating conditioner which will replace moisture and add elasticity to the hair. A leave-in conditioner will help seal the cuticle and rebuild the hair shaft, protecting it from heated styling combs and blow dryers.
· Take care to set blow dryers and hooded dryers at the proper time and temperature to avoid over drying delicate Black hair. Air drying is best for natural hair. Simply towel dry wet natural hair and braid it loosely.
· To maintain a healthy head of hair between salon visits, handle your delicate hair with care. Avoid wearing tight headbands, scarves, and rubber bands or pulling the hair back away from the face, which cause breakage and receding hairlines.
· Massage the scalp regularly to encourage oil production. Once a month try a hot oil treatment, which will lubricate dry scalp conditions as well as moisturize brittle black hair.
· Be sure to tie your hair up at night. Your hair will get tangled and break while you sleep and the natural oils will rub off on the pillow. Some people even recommend using a silk or satin night cap over your hair, or a do-rag. Satin scarves and pillow cases in general are better for your hair as cotton absorbs your hair’s natural oils and cotton pillow cases can tangle your hair.
· The key to good black hair, on top of proper, gentle care, is finding the right stylist. Just because your cousin does hair, doesn’t mean she can do your hair. Find a good stylist who uses quality products, acts professionally and asks questions. Your hair has a lot of potential, but it’s up to you to realize it.
Summary:
Hair does not turn gray with age; it actually loses color due to the lack of new color pigment in each strand of hair. There is no right answer for how often you should wash your hair, this varies for each individual. Using too much shampoo will strip natural oils from your hair and contribute to breakage and flyways. Massaging your scalp on a regular basis will stimulate oil production, which will help reduce the dryness of your hair. Love your hair and don’t forget they also require your care!!
